Old: Many mitzvot require an object to enact: a shofar to blow on Rosh Hashana; matza to eat on Pesach; a lulav and etrog to shake on Sukkot. And on Chanukah you need…a house! It is not enough to have a menorah to light – the Talmud tells us that you need a home to light it in. Why didn’t the Rabbis think that lighting the menorah was enough – didn't that remind us of the miracle in the Temple? Why did the lighting have to happen in a home? [...]
